Tentative plan. Please comment (esp.) on items with an asterisk ** (in your comments you can refer to sections by number, e.g. 3.1.3)
11:30a begin pre-banquet reception.
** how about a catered appetizer? I was thinking the "domestic cheese platter" (serves up to 50, $80).
I'd like to run a powerpoint slide show of pictures from various years.
Dawn Van Hook from InterVarsity National is checking for a collection of back issues of HIS magazine (including the 1963 issue in which LCF is mentioned) for participants to peruse
12:30p buffet lunch
Welcome and instructions ** Tim, Brian, or Ken
opening prayer ** any committee members interested?
buffet meal (it looks like the "mediterranean theme" is the clear winner among the committee members)
should we have some music? Sarah Kind is coming. I though of asking her to play her saxophone for a couple songs. What do you think?
12:50? begin program while some finish eating -- it depends on how long it takes to go through the line
Introductions -- Brian D. (Brian is acting as the student host)
Celebration committee (stand)
IV Staff who have served at Lawrence (stand, then introduce by name and years)
Faculty advisers (stand, then introduce by name)
Charter members (introduce by name as honored guests)
** either Brian or Tim briefly introduce the following speakers
Al Gephardt (charter member). I've already asked him to share on the theme of "50 years of God's faithfulness" for perhaps 10 minutes or so. Something about how God met him and worked in the late 50s, as well as perspective on how that early experience set a trajectory for God's work throughout their lives. 10 minutes may not be long enough.
A current student? (10 min?) ** I thought about asking senior Jenny Grogan to share on the theme of God's faithfulness while she's been at Lawrence. There are other possibilities.
**Ken, providing some history and perspective on the intervening years (10 min.?). The alumni office suggested a faculty member speak
** (5 min.?) Pastor Tom Lambrecht (LCF alum from the late 70s and local pastor) -- I have not asked him yet. I though of asking Tom to be the "pitch man": to speak briefly on providing for LCF for the future. He would briefly outline various ways to support the ongoing ministry of IV at LU, including
prayer (a sign up for prayer letters will be available)
financial support of staff (IV envelopes available)
the Lawrence Fund (Mark Breseman, the alumni director, asked if we would mention this too).
** closing prayer?
I've been part of a number of IV fund-raising events which have the typical pattern of :keynote speaker, pitch person (makes the case for supporting ministry), student testimony, and current staffer does "state of the ministry" (not in that order). While I'd like to offer people the opportunity to participate in support, this event isn't primarily a fund-raising event. That's why I've suggested this different format. Please let me know what you think. Timing is also important. If you think we can go longer I'd like to give some more time to Al (as sort of a keynote speaker). The 40 min. total above probably underestimates.
Brief comments are easy on an email, but if you have longer comments or questions you should probably just give me a call.
Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate having some others to pass these ideas by.
Tim
